Description
My Last Supper photographed with all developmentally disabled adults from the Peppermint Ridge facility in Corona.
It took over a year to get all of the permissions from the families of the residents. I had only 15 minutes for the shoot. My main camera died on the first shot...so I photographed everyone with my decrepit Holga thinking none of this was ever going to work. Miraculously (and I mean that in every sense of the word) every frame turned out.
It was all there....It was spread out over 60 frames but it was all there. A digital composite was made to create a 1:12 printing moquette and then every image was printed to scale traditionally in the darkroom based upon the measurements. Every image was printed at least three times.
A master carpenter (named 'Cowboy') built the three 72"x48" wooden panels. He worked for beer. Friends helps with the gesso priming. Then every image was glued into place and underpainted. It weighs nearly 300lbs.
The final painting was done live on Good Friday in three one hour acts at SMASHLABS in Los Angeles April 2nd 2010. No single work has challenged or pushed me further - artistically or spiritually. This was a first in more ways than I can count...
