EMPTY - THE PASSING OF JEPHTHAH'S DAUGHTER

In a moment debated by scholars and theologians for centuries , Jephthah made a tragic vow. In the fight to save his people he promised to sacrifice as a burnt offering whatever greeted him at his door upon his return if the battle was victorious.

No one but him made him make this vow. No one held him to it, but he bound himself to it regardless.

His only daughter came to meet him. And as the story goes, he did as he promised. Here he sits before the last of the dying funeral pyre.

Powerful story. The world was vastly different then; and yes, a word was a word. A vow was a vow. And people did understand the inherent power and magic contained in words and promises, as well as the price of breaking a promise.

Now days people break promises all day long, and wonder why their lives are meaningless. (rolls eyes)

Great work. Beautifully done.

dramatic portrait; but sad story - life should NOT be sacrificed to preserve one's honor

Thank you and agreed. Though I'm not sure he held it to preserve his honor, but in those days a vow was a vow. You just didn't break one ever. Later in the book another vow cost even more lives.

Thank you!
Well, Agamemnon sacrificed Iphegenia to appease Artemis. Jephthah did it out of a personal ill-conceived vow. God never asked it of him nor would he have. So the tragedy of it for Jephthah is that the horror fell entirely on his own shoulders and he had no one to blame but himself. I'm working on the three panels that come before this one now. Just chose the shots tonight...

I can sense the weight on his being because of the decision/vow he made.
