This was the end of something.
Something that finally needed releasing...

It was created in performance at USC in 1997.

the way it's made of blood,
makes this work more interpretative and oustanding, because it's made with your soul.

Ack! Amazing! I can't believe it took me so long to comment about this one! The floating, the waxy look (great!!), the heavenly quality (even looks like she could be burning), and I love the different sheets that combine to give it a layered effect! Ack! Obviously a +Fav from me. As soon as I trim down my favorites, people like you bring it back up to unmanagable amounts! This site is so depressing! It makes me wish I was an artist again! It's been sooo long! I want to do art, but I want to do well in school! They don't like me uploading movies onto the site either (i'm a film major). How are you possibly so good?! I can't believe this! I never ramble on about pieces... look what you did!

Wonderful piece! Knowing that there is blood in that also makes it eerie, but in a good way of course.

First impression was, now this is maybe strange to some people, but the hanging man from the Tarot deck! Just the pose and her hair, she looks upside down. She is ethereal and not of this world is she? On fire, in water, in's very open to personal interpretation. You seem to be able to draw moods out of your subjects which I would think would be hard cause everyone freezes or poses or is aware anyway of the camera.
kevissimo Featured By Owner Nov 19, 2003  Professional Traditional Artist
I guess it's just letting people be who they are as opposed to having them jump through hoops. But this was one of the few where I actually had a particular idea in mind. It does have a bit of the Hanged Man going on...which was unintentional...but adds a whole other level I hadn't thought about....

She was leaping off a chair and looking up to a spot on the studio ceiling...The more we shot, the more emotional she became. When we were done she shared that she began thinking about her disconnection to God....and that's what that look on her face is.

But when the piece is done, it's no longer what I was thinking about or what she was going through, but what everyone sees...I think that's what I love the most...

Thank you, as always for your beautiful words...

i absolutely love the light area behind the model.. the way it flows, its general shape.. it could be fire, water, wind, grass, an opening in the clouds. leaves this so open for interpretation. another one i can just stare at daily and never get tired of.

keep up the excellent work!

btw: ... wax & BLOOD??? *isscared*

kevissimo Featured By Owner Nov 18, 2003  Professional Traditional Artist
heh.... well it's actually not that scary. well maybe the wax part isn't.
I did a piece a number of years ago (before I had a matt cutter) and sliced my finger accidentally and got blood on the piece.... at first i thought 'oh damn..'
and then i thought....'now wait, there's something to that...' It has some deeper meaning for me now...

But I don't go around self-inflicting wounds for the pieces...I ususally wait until I have some sort of band-aid level accident around the studio and then go and 'annoint' particular pieces. So the blood is technically there, but in such a tiny amount that it's mostly symbolic...

and thank you again...I'M glad you put me on your watch....
Orphne Featured By Owner Apr 10, 2004
It's funny that you say that. I do the very same to my personal pieces. (None of them are posted at Devart, for fear of terrifying my family and friends...) Blood is a universal symbol for both the vibrancy and fragility of life and often a reminder of death and the sway of power it holds.

The first time I, as you put it so eloquently, annointed my piece, I had been in a bit of a rough spot. Art seems to let me drain those emotions somehow. Perhaps it's just that I'm putting what I feel to something more visible. Something I can physically examine. Then again, perhaps I'm a bit demented.

Ah well. The piece was the portrait of a nude cradeling her heart (the organ) in her arms and as I was painting, I moved to quickly and sustained a small papercut. Unfortunately for me, my fingers tend to bleed a lot, so I kept trying to dab the stuff away to keep painting, when it occured to me that blood might make a good medium. (It was very late at night.)

I ended up squeezing out the red all over my picture in specific places so that it would dry into a burt sienna shade, while mixing other bits of it with the paint on my pallet.

When I stood back to look at it, I hadn't noticed anything different about the painting than when I had used pure paint (predictably), but the piece became mine in a more literal sense. The art and I shared that same blood -the same life force, and since then, when ever I get a papercut, I use it to my advantage.

So in a way, I can understand the significance of this piece of yours and in other ways, I will never be able to fully comprehend it. Because it's yours.

...This is already extremely long for a comment, so I think I'll stop and enjoy more of your art. :)
kevissimo Featured By Owner Apr 10, 2004  Professional Traditional Artist
Thanks so much for sharing all of that....
They say the Life is in the blood. My first time happend while cutting a matt. I've only intentionally drawn blood for a work once. That was for The Awakening (the Prague mural) That involved unfortunately a somewhat drunken roommate and an exacto knife....I got a little more blood than I had bargained for.

The original one of this is a color image...perhaps I'll submit it as well...

Thank you again....I enjoyed hearing your experience and story behind your work....
natashalyonne Featured By Owner Nov 18, 2003
oh... that's an interesting aspect.. it's understandable that the image gets a deeper meaning if you mix your paint with blood.. a little scary, still :-) but i guess you're just an outstanding artist :aww:
annaa Featured By Owner Nov 18, 2003
Such a powerfull picture this one............I see her both floating and falling...I see her just taken of the holy cross...I see her breaking the surface of water...I see her...and I feel her

in all the above emotions

Im on my stomac in worship of your work...stunned to my core

Your work change me............

kevissimo Featured By Owner Nov 18, 2003  Professional Traditional Artist
wow.....thank you... that's all very...humbling.
(and you are very perceptive....) Though much of all that was not my original attempt, I guess that kind of thing is wired into me and can't help coming out.... that presence is always there.

thank you much...
annaa Featured By Owner Nov 18, 2003
Like with words...I guess...we have certain things..images...words..sounds or smells, which trigger emotions in us...

Some words said, with one intention of expressing an oppinion or emotion...offen get recieved different than the intention was, enitially :D

This is what makes all communication so wonderfull and mystical... even if things are said..with the intention to leave nothing for interpitation to the recipiant...the recipiant might find symbolic meaning, and get a very different experience of the said, anyway...

Uhhh alot of blah..sorry:giggle:

Your works a me :D
