NEW OLD WORK

Journal Entry: Sun May 15, 2016, 2:31 PM
DA_banner_header

So for the past few days I have been cataloging nearly every oilgraph I have made since the whole journey started in 1994.
Turns out...that's a lot of work..

I also noticed that a small handful of it never ended up being posted here for whatever reason
Perhaps I was just too picky or forgetful or both...

And though I am still picky and forgetful, you may see some work from the beginning of the process that's never seen the light of day and was buried in folders for years
And those are literal folders btw...

Stay tuned...

OH, DA...WHAT HAS BECOME OF YOU?

Journal Entry: Tue May 3, 2016, 2:33 PM
DA_banner_header

<rant>
This horrible trend of the "Artistic" Nudes descending into a low end porn feed has been happening for a long time now,
but it's now gotten so bad that I'm now embarrassed to even post there anymore.
It's even happening to the Emotive Portraits gallery.
It's half the reason I'm not around as much as I used to.

It's like people aren't even trying anymore.
You can't make it through one section without amateur snapshots of peoples' genitals appearing.
Sheeh, it's not like if people wanted to find porn it's hard to get,
but this is now just degrading what was once a quality art community site
into a simple collection of garbage.

And I'm not sure what the solution is except more of us who care speak up.
So....please do...

Yes...It's true....

So I get an email Wednesday that they were running a segment on me, the book of Judges and the oligraphs

The very notion of me being on this show creating some of the bloodiest pieces in the series still has me a little freaked out..

But they did it

THE WALKING DEAD - AND HISTORY

Journal Entry: Wed Oct 28, 2015, 3:05 AM
DA_banner_header

I seem to have these continuing strange connections to this show
The only one i watch for the record

The premiere saw an amazing actor I had the honor to shoot with way back when in 2004
Ethan Embry

When I discovered he was on the show I was thrilled for him
And it kinda sucked that he got bit in the same episode....

But here's what we made many years ago
And his sister Kessia's work is still the highest viewed image in my gallery

ETHAN

Ethan i. by kevissimo

Ethan ii. by kevissimo

Oh, weird life you....

And to make the connections even more wild
Back in the day I was an underage zombie in Day of the Dead
You had to be 18 to be a zombie so I lied about my age

Even though I was just one of 300+ extras I managed to befriend one of the new guys on the makeup crew
By the third time I went back, he was like, "Put Kevin in special effect make-up"

I got to eat the lead in close-up

The crew member was Greg Niccotero
who now leads the WD

And I think that is kind of awesome....

MORE ART - AND MOVIES!

Journal Entry: Mon Oct 12, 2015, 5:55 PM
DA_banner_header

Hey everyone...

I know I've been a bit absent from this site.
But it's been for some actually exciting reasons...

At the end of last year a friend and collector of mine who works in film was going to directing his first feature. The film would be about an artist and he wanted to know if I wanted to be the one to make the art.
Naturally my answer was Yes, but I also had been down this road before...

Many such projects never came to fruition.
But this one did...

When reading the script I was struck by the fact that the main character's technique was identical to mine.
I was like, How is that even possible?

Then he told me they had based the main character on me.

He's very much not me in many respects, but the art very much is. So much so that if I didn't rise to the occasion, the film wouldn't work.
Or at least well.

The film is called Magnum Opus
The tag line: "Truth. Justice. And other casualties of war."

So in the late spring of this year I set out to create the nine piece series that was the center point of the movie.
They were very specific pieces many of which I had no idea how to execute.
And they had to work together in such a cohesive way that it forced me to come up with a whole new addition to the Oilgraph technique.

As production drew closer, I worked with the art director to advise on accurately depicting this character's studio.
Ultimately, I just lent them all my stuff....
The easel, the cameras, the lights, the brushes, at least 20 of the other works
and even my ham radio base station...

On the day of shooting the actor painting I was called in to advise on getting it right for it was important for the actor to get it right.

And there was all my stuff.
And the actor dressed like me (for the most part)
and they even painted his hands to look like mine when I'm working and covered in oil paint.

Both awesome and surreal.

I will share more details when I'm cleared to do so...

BREWERY ARTWALK...AND STUFF

Journal Entry: Mon Oct 20, 2014, 5:07 PM
DA_banner_header

Hey everyone...

I'm back. Not that I really left, but for a number of reasons I haven't been as active on DA as I have been in the past.
Some of it has been that I have been putting a great deal of work into our art compound Big Art Labs as well as getting my ham radio station going along with related activities.

Also I had been growing somewhat disillusioned in the direction of DA and haven't been able to put my finger on it.
It just hasn't been as much....fun.
Is it because it's just simply grown?
Some of it is that many of the galleries have simply become clogged with porn
and it's degraded the entire site for me.
I'll rant about that later...

For now I just wanted to announce that I'll be showing work again this weekend at the Brewery Artwalk
I'll again be in Theory Labs which is in the 624 Studio.
And as always, I will be creating live works at 3PM sharp both days.

If you mention that you are from DeviantART I will give you a 20% discount.
Hope to see you there...

HAM RADIO OPERATORS OUT THERE?

Journal Entry: Thu Feb 13, 2014, 9:43 PM
DA_banner_header

Sorry I haven't been posting much of late. The days have been incredibly full of late.
And one of those things was that I finally got my HAM radio license back in August.

Sort of out of the blue a couple years ago with no real prior interest (other than a nostalgic memory of my Grandparents' short wave radio picking up transmissions from Europe)
I suddenly felt compelled to get my license.
So I did
And got my first call sign
KK6GFR

Then I decided to study and pass the next two levels and got my "Extra" license in December.
Which was no small feat for someone who has no electronics background and hasn't used Trigonometry since High School.
And so as a reward for being such a serious geek, I applied for a special call sign.

I am now K1KMO

Why HAM radio? Didn't that archaic practice die when cell phones came on the scene?
Nope. In fact there are more HAM radio operators now then there has been in its entire history.
Cause here's the thing...

It's (practically) bullet proof communication. Especially in emergencies when there is no power and cell phone towers are overwhelmed or out.
When the hurricane struck the Philippines, who handles the emergency traffic? The HAM operators.
It's the same story with any natural disaster, because it's not reliant upon any wireless system or structure.
You're bouncing your transmission through the actual atmosphere and can make contact around the word.

So...Any deviant HAM's out there?

Here is HAM radio explained - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amateur_…
And yes, I just ensured that I'll stay single for some time to come....

FEAR AND KISMET IN CANCUN

Journal Entry: Fri Feb 24, 2012, 1:17 AM

FEAR AND KISMET IN CANCUN

This was the last ditch post I put out from the Cancun airport roughly five hours ago:

"Ok so I haven't heard from anyone and I'm still at the airport. I will wait another 45 minutes and hope someone takes mercy on me. I'll then take a cab to where the party is supposed to be tomorrow. It's the only address I have sine I don't know what hotel I'm booked into.

From there I'm hoping someone will know how to get ahold of you so I can get to the hotel.
Roaming is costing about $25/min but I don't dare turn it off.

Rob says hi because he's the only person who I got through to. He claims I got punked and you're getting married in New York.

Wish me luck.....
-Kevin"

And that's indeed what I set out to do. I was just getting into my very pricey taxi to go to the wrong destination when Kelly called with the actual hotel. Not as nervous a ride as the one I had in Kampala, but regardless I was still unsure as we hit the dark back streets.

Then Cancun sort of blossomed out of liquor stores and I found myself in front of the the swank Hotel Kinbe. You can tell it's swank because swanky hotels always put "Hotel" before their name.

I had just missed Andrea and Carrie, but they told me which restaurant they had gone to. The streets of Cancun were more tasteful than I had imagined though still catering to their American set, for which sobriety seems to evade every age group.

They were still nowhere to be found. I wandered on a few blocks, looked at a couple of restaurants and wondered where I would buy my one and only pair of flip flops. I hit a side street and picked a restaurant at random and sat down to order. Then I heard a laugh. I knew that laugh. It was the same one I heard for the first time nearly 20 years ago.

Of COURSE they had picked the same restaurant. Of course they had sent a shuttle for me and forgot to mention it. Of course...because by some kind of Grace, a special kind of magic seems to visit upon us at times of seemingly random necessity. A week ago I was wondering how I was going to make rent, and now I find myself in some 4 star hotel on the shores of Cancun with people I love more than life. There. It happened.

And tonight was the first night. There are four more of these. Kelly gets married Saturday, completing the circle of me having shot all of their marriages. Carrie and Cory, then Andrea and Matt. Now Kelly and Steve.

So as we wandered down 10th Avenue with it's slurring, thinning crowds, separated by nothing new other than the 50 years that will eventually eat into everyone who lives, I was haunted by the thought that we all think that everything we do has never been done by anyone else in all of history.

Perhaps....but as we said goodnight and I took to the roof top in my stubbornly nocturnal ways and contemplated the seemingly miraculous ways of the last 6 hours, I realized that it didn't matter. It was still our story. And if for some reason, a week from now, I go back to wondering about rent or if anyone is going to buy my art, I will know that I had THIS. I think I take photos to prove that magic still exists in this world...

OH, HI! MAYAN COLANDER BIRTHDAYS AND CATCH-UP

Journal Entry: Tue Feb 7, 2012, 2:46 PM
DA_banner_header

I have not gone into hiding....but I have been insanely busy, especially beginning new work and doing an enormous amount of restoration work at BIG ART LABS.

But for now, birthday pics!
Now, I have to confess that I really don't care about my birthday. But I do care about a great party and amazing friends. The birthday is merely an excuse.
And as I have in the past, I set up a little shoot off to the side for people to get their pre-apocalypse on.

Because this year it was....
2012 MAYAN COLANDER PRE-ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE BIRTHDAY BUNKER FESTIVAL OF HOPE!

I like themes that are easy to get...

But one of best things of the evening was the arrival of some of my fellow deviants
namely NevaehLleh :iconnevaehlleh:
who you all know kicks ass. I've had the honor of having her in a lot of my work and most recently "THE BIRTH OF ABIMELEK"
fav.me/d4d4z8p

And one the greatest women of heart, who has been a voice of encouragement to me over the years -
carnyval :iconsavageartsval:
And they both totally brought it...

Much love to you both!

THE MAYAN COLANDER PRE-ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE BIRTHDAY BUNKER FESTIVAL OF HOPE
NevaehLleh - in true fighting form

THE MAYAN COLANDER PRE-ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE BIRTHDAY BUNKER FESTIVAL OF HOPE

Shenanigans...

THE MAYAN COLANDER PRE-ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE BIRTHDAY BUNKER FESTIVAL OF HOPE
And with my best friend and BIG ART LABS business partner, Christine aka "Crunchy"

And despite all of the whiskey and broadswords everyone escaped injury...

OCCUPY (BREAKFAST) LA

Journal Entry: Sun Oct 30, 2011, 1:37 AM
DA_banner_header

Two weeks ago my friend Robby had the simple idea to just go serve breakfast downtown at Occupy LA. They served hundreds...and after three weeks I was finally able to join them...

I hauled out our massive generator to cook pancakes and ended up leaving it for them to use.
In talking with the people who have been there for nearly a month their greatest needs are, not surprisingly in the areas of hygiene and germ control.
So if you feel called to drop anything off for them, they could use
Boxes of wet wipes
Alcohol wipes
Sewing supplies

And your support
